The future is the opposite of the past, and comes after the present. Unlike the past, which has happened, the future has not happened. This distinction is because of the thermodynamic arrow of time: the future has higher (total) entropy than the past. It is often possible to infer the past from the present, but much more difficult to infer the future from the present. Sometimes, things which have not happened in the past happen in the future.
